Custom Field Variables not working in Email Subject

How do I enter custom field variables for the email subject?

Right now I have two custom fields in admin created. I can add %%Custom1%% and it spits back content into the email's body but I put %%Custom1%% into the email subject line, the subject line says %%Custom1%%

What is wrong? Is this the wrong way to add the variables to the subject line or does the subject line not support this kind of variable?

It's a dropdown option I created.

Custom fields are currently not supported in the email subjects, only in the message.
