What terms did you try when SEARCHING for a solution:
Write your message below: In August my web hosting company stopped allowing SMTP relaying.
Up until that time my guestbook worked fine - there is one message that was posted in August.
I don't get a lot of guests and it was not until I did my change-over to 2016 that I noticed the guestbook wasn't working.
When I attempted to make a test message of my own the Internet Explorer browser gave this error message:
PHP Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() in e:\websites\1414\davidkusel.com\guestbook\gbook.php on line 953
I had never taken the time to understand how the guestbook script functions until now.
I see there is a APPTMP folder where the guestbook message is stored until I would approve it.
This folder is where I found several posts made since August but since the SMTP relay was disabled by my hosting company I was not getting the e-mail notification that to approve or disapprove the guestbook message.
I searched for a script with SMTP authentication to get an idea of what my host tech support is referring to and found this example:
http://support.webecs.com/kb/a390/php-m ... ation.aspx
Anyway...does your newest guestbook version have SMTP authorization?
If not are there any options to edit your script?
If not and you aren't planning on adding this function I guess I'll have to try to find another guestbook script that has authorization and also all of the security features that I just love in your script to stop spammers.
Thanks
Dave
SMTP authorization script
Re: SMTP authorization script
GBook relies on PHP mail() to send emails; if that's not configured properly in the server PHP settings (or disabled by hosting company) it won't work.
Adding authenticated SMTP support to GBook may be added in the future, but honestly it is currently not high on the list as other things have priority.
