For some unknown reason messages keep going missing on the forum , is there a default setting on how long messages can be kept on the forum for or how many messages can be kept on the forum at one time before they are deleted?

Yes, there is a default setting and it is set to 50. After that old messages will start deleting. You can change that in your settings.php file, read the readme.htm file for details.
