I discovered today the GBook package and am very pleased with it. But not before several hours of headaches, teeth gnashing, and cursing. I read all the relevant posts here and was determined to get 'r done, but finally had to call tech support. I've been with Powweb for several years and always got good support and good service from them, but the guy who answered the phone far exceeded my expectations.
Unlike another poster here who was initially run off by them but eventually had success, my guy not only checked the PHP sessions to make sure they were working but did probably 15 or 20 minutes of troubleshooting on the code trying for a solution. The success came when we finally determined that it needs to be loaded from their Install Panel, rather than installing from the zip file that a link elsewhere on their site sent me to. Ten seconds and I was up and running.
Now, their install is v1.4.something, but I was able to port my v1.6 files over and it worked just fine. I noticed there was a cgi-bin directory which had been added by their install, but it is beyond my current knowledge base to be able to discern what might have made the difference by the addition of that and its contents.
Even though I'm fence post stupid about PHP for now, I was able to make some mods to integrate it into the look and feel of the site I attached it to, so I'm very happy. I got my favicon to work and the only big deal left is to figure out the code to make the title display at the top of the browser. I even changed around the bad words file, commenting several of them out (I'm apparently not as sensitive as whoever developed that list), and substituting "farging" "ice hole" and "bastiches" (from the movie "Johnny Dangerously") for the appropriate bad words. I hope someone will eventually find that very amusing. I did.
Thanks for all the prior discussion which helped me out. Someone who really knows this stuff could possibly contact Powweb to find out what it is about their installation that's different from a manual one from the zip file. But even if that knowledge isn't forthcoming, for Powweb users, the install from their site couldn't be easier.
