Hi Klemen and who else reading this,
I am new here on the board. I want to say thank you because your "FTP and CHMOD tutorial for beginners" really saved my day. Here is my story:
On my site I would like to have a download counter. In the past there was a site called downloadcounter.com that did the service for you. It worked well but unfortunately that site doesn't exist anymore, so I googled for a download counter. I found some scripts but they never made it clear how to implement them on your site, because the authors obviously assumed that you knew how to.
Example, someone wrote in the comments: Upload the files in ascii mode. Yeah right, what am I going to do in order to make sure that my files are in ascii mode?? Big mystery. Another comment: CHMOD the files to 777. No explanation of what that is all about. Another big mystery. I think I have been doing a CHMOD some years ago but I had long forgotten what it is about. In some script comments there were some words in connection with CHMOD about getting permission to write to files. So I thought "Am I supposed to ask the owner of the server to get permission to do that?".
I can tell you that I spend an entire evening from dinner time and way beyond bed time looking at dounload counter matters, php matters and looking for answers on the net.
Thus I also found your ccount and your tutorial. After reading the tutorial I know how simple it is. Big lumps of mystery clouds dissolved from my mind because of that tutorial.
This is a typical situation in many areas. The most simple things are not explained because they are so obvious to the writer that he/she doesn't even consider that there could be a problem.
I am violin teacher myself, teaching beginners, so I know by experience how difficult the most simple things can be. If you don't know what the teacher is talking about you are lost. You would have no idea whether the matter was complicated or simple.
By the way, the ccount works fine and so does mboard!
Enjoy your day!
