What terms did you try when SEARCHING for a solution: Have spent a couple of days following readme file instructions. Have set permissions to 666, have double checked for typos, have searched this forum, and have reviewed my error log (which is all Greek to me)

sounds like the installation/file permissions are messed.
follow the installation procedure very carefully

Originally it was offered by Hypermart as software automatically installed thru their InstallCentral. They installed older version 1.4x which did the same thing (including not displaying the captcha image), so I downloaded and installed 1.5 and set permissions to 666 and changed variables including being careful to make sure the re-named entries.txt was the same per readme. Version 1.5 reacted the same way including not displaying captcha image)... so I set it to text validation mode. It still give me error message. I have tried uploading by using Hypermart File Manager, by publishing in Frontpage, etc. I have other PHP scripts (for shipping and handling, shopping cart, etc.) which I have uploaded using Frontpage and/or Hypermart file manager and they work.

I believe there may be something not set right with Hypermart... which I think is odd if they recommend and even install the gbook as part of their hosting package (but say I must get answers to why it doen't work from PHPJunkyard... which is why I am here to see if anybody can identify from the error codes what I or Hypermart has set wrong?).

Did version 1.4 work flawlessly for you?

Have you deleted all 1.4 files before installing 1.5?

in general terms, if you follow the manual installation instructions it should work out of the box

Thanks, but, as in my previous post, it did not work flawlessly when installed by Hypermart... it had the same errors when they installed it with the old version. I upgraded, deleted all files, and reinstalled carefully according to readme file... other than I published using FrontPage and set permissions using Hypermart's file manager. They show that permissions are set to 666 and they are all the new versions of the files.

This is why... when I get the same error messages when Hypermart performs the install on the server end as I get when I do the install independent of their autoinstall (manually), I get the same problems, then logically it shouldn't be the install, but should be something like the settings on the server's PHP and how they are reacting to the script... This is why I have posted the server's error log for the proble, so somebody can advise what is set wrong by Hypermart, so I can tell them what they need to do different.

I will do a 4th complete delete and reinstall for the record, but until someone answers if FrontPage upload or FileManger web upload is sufficient, then I may be wasting my time again.... but here goes.

Deleted all and used FTP this time to upload. Set permissions of the 2 text files to 666. I cleared my error code log on the server. Tried the guestbook. It duplicates the exact same problem as previous attempts.

Again, I repeat myself: If Hypermart installed it independent of me using their InstallCentral... and I have repeatedly deleted and installed and consistently get the same error message... even when I switch from old version to new 1.5 version... something is wrong besides uploading the files and setting permissions. Something has to be wrong besides the installation. I again suggest that is has to do with where Hypermart has their PHP files or how they have it set... sessions or whatever. I don't know PHP code, but if somebody does, they should be able to point out in the following server scripting error the problems with how Hypermart is processing the gbook.php file. Like session.save_path, no such file or directory, failed opening, line 0, line 46, etc.... Seems like a PHP expert could look at this code and figure out what is wrong... it must make sense to somebody.

Here is the most recent log generated from a single attempt to sign the gbook after completely deleting and FTPing the files back up to the server:

Hypermart was not able to figure out what makes the 1.43x version work and the 1.5 version NOT work. They also cannot figure out why the graphic verification image does not appear on either version.

Version 1.43 doesn't have a text validation option and the graphic doesn't work, so I guess I am going to pass on the 1.43 until Hypermart can figure out how to make the captcha work... or until they get the 1.5 version set up for autoinstall for their customers.

I have been hours on the phone with their tech help and no answers yet.

I know from one of my recent posts that Klemen is very busy at the moment.

His normal suggestion with the problems you seem to be having, would be to upload to your site the following files, which would give the PHP guru’s the information that they need to answer your query.

You can see information on this by looking at the post which also has an .hta file link. Had you put in a search for session problems, you would have found these items quite easily.

I may give it a try and live with the version 1.43 in the meanwhile.

However, regarding searching for "session problems"... you are assuming that I knew enough to know that my problem was a even sessions related. There were lots of other words floating around in the error log (i.e. hermes, streaming, path not found, etc.). For me to have a clue to know to search for "session problems" is asking a lot for somebody who knows knothing about PHP other than to follow install and check readme instructions. At this point I don't even know what a session is, let alone that they can have problems.

From what I've read in the readme that came with gbook was that PHP Sessions should have only been part of the problem which related only to display of the captcha security graphic and not responsible for the entire functioning of the guestbook (i.e., its ability to post to entries.txt file, and other errors logged).

But I will supply this info to Hypermart if they want it. I haven't been successful in getting them to upgrade their InstallCentral to 1.5 yet... so I don't expect much.

BTW

uploading .htaccess to gbook's directory and/or deleting the suggested 2 lines of code. have both been tried and neither worked.

.htaccess uploaded to my gbook's directory actually caused an internal network server error whether set to 0 or to 1... it crashed.

Upon deleting the .htaccess file, gbook no longer crashed, but still have the same original problems.

So I guess searching for "session problem" still would have left me asking the same questions.

But again... things for trying.

I uploaded the 2 session_test PHP files

Results of running test were.

session_test.php was loaded and ran fine.

session_test2.php result in:

$_SESSION['test'] is set to: FALSE

If your ISP’s sessions were set correctly, it should have read $_SESSION['test'] is set to: TRUE, so you need to ask them to help you, as no one on the forum can, because it needs to be corrected from their end.

Inform them that you have conducted this test, and the problem lies with their setup.

Hope you are successful. NB. It would still be a good idea to post the two test on the forum as the first contains info on your PHP setup.

Definitely problem with sessions. Make sure the folder "/var/php_sessions/" exists and is writable by scripts. Ask your host to check PHP sessions if not sure.
