My hosting allows me a single MySQL database, which is currently being used by our Wordpress install. Is there any reason I can't add the HESK tables to this?

Having a dedicated MySQL database and user for HESK is considered a good practice and highly recommended (see security checklist).

However, it will work just as well within an existing database, but make sure that the "Table prefix" setting when installing HESK is unique (not shared with any other script using the same database).
