Microsoft SQL Server

What terms did you try when SEARCHING for a solution:
sql server, microsoft sql server, can you use sql server, sql server 2008

do you have to use mysql with this, or can you connect it to a microsoft sql server?

HESK requires MySQL, it does not support MS SQL.

Not sure if PHP itself supports connecting to Microsoft SQL Server.
MySQL, Sqlite and Postgres yes.
