Is there a flag I can set so that when someone goes to view the guestbook the most recent entries (ie the last page) is what is opened rather than the first page?

In the normal version of the guestbook the most recent posting is placed on the first page as first to read message. So it is not in the way you described in your message that most recent entries are placed on the last page. Maybe you have a different guestbook? You did not post a link to your guestbook page so we can not check it.

I do not monitor the Gbook forums regularly anymore since I do not use the Gbook script myself anymore for a long time. But it helped me a lot in learning to understand php.
