How to search custom fields

I need to know how its possible to search either by first name/last name or by a custom field.

I've been attempting to use the built in searches but they are useless to us because they come up with no hits whatsoever. I have to physically scroll through each ticket hoping to find the right one, now we have 300 tickets and we cant keep doing it to look for a customer.
