Gmail SMTP authentication failed

Dear support forum,
We have been using Hesk for a while as our support ticket system. Since we set it up, we have been using Gmail SMTP as our preferred mail method, and it worked. However, it has stopped working. We are now not receiving emails at all from the ticket system. When we test the SMTP connection, we get this error: "535-5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted". Looking it up, it has to do with the "Less secure app access" setting being removed by Gmail as of the end of May.
I was wondering if anyone had a solution to fix this, or if a fix is being created in a new release. We don't want to use PHP mail, as Gmail flags those as potentially unsafe (which would put off our users).
