email txt files - one big block of text

Is there anyway to put a hard break into the text file that creates the emails? I'm getting a block of text that's all pressed together.
I figured it was a problem with my email client so I added html tags to the text file and </br> to create a line break and it fixed it (but I don't really want to do that).
If I keep it like that then someone with html email turned off will get the coding and without the tags the text isn't spaced correctly.
Anyone else come across this problem?
