My GBook 1.7 works nicely.
I set $settings['notify']=1; in the settings.php file, but for some reason I didn't receive an e-mail notification when I tried to post to my own GBook.
I have the folowing lines in my php.ini file:
[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
; http://php.net/smtp
SMTP = smtp.mail.dk
;SMTP = localhost
; http://php.net/smtp-port
smtp_port = 25
; For Win32 only.
; http://php.net/sendmail-from
sendmail_from = xx@yy.dk
Please provide me some suggestions on what more I should do for the e-mail notification function to work !

E-mail notification Function
Works fine on my test server.
Amanda not sure what the problem is, you will need to check with your host.
Tame try uploading 1.6 files again to confirm it really works there as there were no changes to the mail code in 1.7.
